Anyway, I want to report that we just returned from a birding trip to north-east Brazil. The temperature there was close to 30 degrees (above zero). When we landed in EIA we were greeted by the minus 30 degree frigid Alberta winter weather. What a brutal awakening - we live in Alberta!
It felt good to be travelling again. The landscapes we travelled through included Cerrado (grassland), Caatinga (white forest), Chapada (rocky highlands) and Atlantic Forest. The first three drier landscapes have naturally occurring cactuses. One of the purposes for our trip was (hoping) to get pictures of hummingbirds feeding on cactus flowers - Melocactus in this case. I did get some passable picture to share with you folks. There was a hummingbird garden where they planted a patch of Melocactus for attracting hummingbirds and that made it possible for picture taking. Here are some pictures. Due to the problem I ran into this morning in posting, I will break up the pictures in several batches.
This year's rainy season came early, so cactuses started blooming early. These two- story-tall towering cactuses are ubiquitous. The appearance of their flowers is disappointing but, I think, they must offer good food source for insects and maybe birds.

Bromeliads and small cactus grow from the cracks in rocks. The small cactus grows beside lichens.

We found this one growing in Cerrado landscape, about two feet tall. The buds are about to open.

A patch of cultivated Melocactus where the hummingbirds come feed on. The flowers are less than one centimeter in diameter. They only open after 3 pm.

We saw these tiny blue flowers in the both Chapada and Cerrado landscape. A closer look revealed that there are, in fact, porter weed flowers. Never seen a pure blue variety before. However, these have very few flowers, so probably are of little horticultural value although the color is striking. Colin, if I remember correctly, you have porter weeds in your garden for attracting hummingbirds. I though you might be interested in seeing this blue variety.
